Gettin' "Corny" in Iowa!

Kansas.  Wheat Capital of the USA.  Center of the USA.  Nothing else.

The kids are making the letters "KS" for Kansas.

That's all we did in Kansas.

We were there long enough to do this, and buy a postcard.

Bye.

We loved Iowa!  The hog smell, not so much.

We found the local watering hole just outside of Sioux City, Iowa.  Almost immediately, my husband commenced "Operation:  Put the Local Teenagers in Their Place."
This video showcases how he won their respect.

View from our motorhome.  Out in the middle of that cornfield was a paved bike path - it went on and on and all you could see in every direction was corn.  Kinda neat, kinda eery.

Iowa was a restful stay for us.  We didn't feel obligated to get out and explore, we just enjoyed the natural beauty of the state.  Our campsite overlooked rolling fields of corn as far as you could see, with the most quaint little farmhouses.  We loved watching the prairie dogs peek out and scamper around when they thought we weren't looking.

Office with a view.  Yes, he puts plywood on top of the steering wheel.

We visited the Sioux Feed Company.  They don't do tours.  This is not a museum or a landmark.  We were just interested in the Iowa economy, and dropped in.  I know, it's "corny" (pun intended).  We struck a conversation with a man named Bill who showed us around, and taught us about how grain elevators work.  We chatted about ethanol, and then he showed us to the feed lot.  Nice guy.

We found many categories in which Iowa and South Carolina are similar . . .

Some final notes to the blog reader:  Based on feedback and comments, I wanted to clear a few things up.
  1. I'm aware that the word "away" is spelled a-w-a-y.  The title of this blog is not meant to read "away".  The separation between the "a" and the "way" is intentional.  My meaning was "a way" to do life.  This is our way -- just one of many ways to go in this life.  RV'ing is the way we go -- just a way.   I was trying to be clever.
  2. I mentioned in the first blog that we'd be using laundromats.  We do have a washing machine/dryer combo unit on the motorhome.  It's super duper tiny.  I thought it would only be useful when something itsy bitsy needed immediate cleaning.  Much to my delight, we've been quite well served by the little unit.  Our loads are small, and take about three hours, and consume about 20 gallons of water -- a precious resource.  It also shakes the entire RV when we run it.  It also heats up the RV.  For the prior two reasons, we only do laundry at night.
  3. I received a suggestion to design a fridge map. Hilarious. A map of exactly where everything is in the refrigerator posted on the refrigerator door.  I can just imagine the kids crossing off the picture of a yogurt every time they take one.
  4. How is it having a puppy on board?  Billie Jean is doing well.  She's really only chewed up two things:  our driver's seat, and our passenger's seat.  I raised my voice when I saw both.
  5. I am so thankful for your prayers, comments, e-mails, warnings, well-wishes, etc.  They keep our spirits high.
